This American manufacturer and retailer of outdoor wear and footwear was founded by Nathan Swartz, who began making shoes in 1918 before buying out The Abington Shoe Company in 1955. Under that name, Swartz and his family introduced to the industry innovative injection-molding technology, which enables the production of waterproof boots by connecting the soles to the leather uppers without stitching. The company name was officially changed to “Timberland” in 1973, after the success of its eponymous waterproof leather boots.
