Royal Elastics makes equipment for the inspired way of life. Art. Music. Expressive Sports. These are things we support and create and do. Founded in 1996 by a pair of teenagers in Sydney, Australia, Royal Elastics' unique shoes use elastic bands, rather than laces, to secure feet in shoes. This innovation, simple though it may be, promotes an easy slip in/out wearability, which attracted immediate attention in Sydney -- then London -- then globally. Elastication spoke of a distinctly street-styled, youthful and laid-back lifestyle, and a quirky and easygoing sense of humor. The Royal Elastics brand was acquired by a much larger footwear company in 2001, which allowed improvements in global distribution and product quality. The parent company also allowed Royal Elastics to continue supporting emerging artists and musicians by event and artistic collective sponsorship. The brand's enthusiasm for art has been marked by historic collaborations with artistic entities from the worlds of music (Gwen Stefani's Harajuku Lovers, Lyrics Born) and graphic arts (Andy Warhol, Doze Green), among many others. Beginning with the Smooth -- your basic slip-on -- Royal Elastics moved onward, developing through the Overeasy, the Chargrill and (the brand's strongest-selling shoe to date) the appropriately-named Icon. After nine years under a corporate umbrella, Royal Elastics reacquired independence, and is now moving forward, playing to original strengths. We understand and support the compulsion to create," says Royal Elastics Executive Vice President John Bondoc, "We make elastic footwear and apparel because if we didn't, our heads would explode. Now that we're independent, the sacrifices we need to maintain our ability to create have become more and more concrete. Royal Elastics has become what it has supported."
