The JackThreads Peacoat Is An Uncontested Outerwear Classic Made Better

More than any other piece of men’s outerwear, the peacoat is an icon. It’s the white undershirt of outerwear — a throw-on-and-go staple that’s simply part of the equation, and the piece that’s grabbed instinctually when walking out the door.

Dating back to the 1700s, the peacoat is as timeless as it gets. But timeless doesn’t have to mean stale. So with refined and hybridized technical details, The JackThreads Peacoat features all of the typical markings of a classic peacoat, with updates that increase versatility and wearability to best suit today’s man.

Named not for little green pods, but rather the cloth from which the coat was originally made (either Dutch twilled blue cloth called pij or a coarse blue cloth with a nap on one side used by the Navy called pilot cloth, abbreviated to P-cloth, depending on whom you ask), peacoats are characterized by a shorter length, double-breasted front, broad lapel, and slash pockets. As the coat rose to prominence, particularly among naval seamen, it was spun in tightly woven wool for added warmth and wind-protection.

The jacket's oversized Ulster collar, with a distinct, notched lapel, allows for increased versatility, protecting the wearer's neck and face when fully buttoned while not sacrificing comfort or range of motion.

Rather than heavy, boiled wool, the JackThreads Peacoat is built from a wool-polyester blend, which makes it lightweight, softer, and allows the fabric to drape and move with the wearer’s body.

Its insulated, quilted interior is rare among peacoats, making JT’s iteration stand out and building technical details into an otherwise simple layer.

"Hybrids are in our brand identity. We’re never just one thing, and the pieces we design are never just one thing, because our guy is, needs, and wants a little bit of everything. So this is kind of the next take on the peacoat."

Kat Stupp, JackThreads Design Director

Concerning fit, the JackThreads peacoat runs slim, building a more tailored look, yet still leaving room for layers underneath (the JT DoWN Vest, pictured above, is our go-to for extra warmth).

"Our vendor who’s making this also does a lot of our suiting, so [the peacoat] has a truly tailored construction, and we’ve leaned on their expertise when it comes to fit."

What’s more, JackThreads' take on the peacoat sheds overtly nautical details — namely by eliminating the fouled anchor button design (with an anchor wrapped in rope). This not only simplifies the coat, but also makes it more wearable to a broader spectrum of tastes. A chambray lining, too, enhances breathability and puts a contemporary spin on an age-old classic.

"We work bottom-up and top-down. So at the start of each season, we begin with the hard pieces — the pieces of outerwear and the bottoms — that a guy needs. For winter, it’s a topcoat, a peacoat, and a fashion coat, which is the fishtail parka."

Kat Stupp
JackThreads
Across the board, pared-down, classic menswear pieces are undergoing a resurgence, reinvention, and modernization, and the JT Peacoat is no exception. While trend-driven pieces like the fishtail parka may be enticing, they need to be tempered with a heritage-inspired counterpart. A versatile wardrobe demands a mix of both genres and, as proven by over 300 years of history, a peacoat will remain in favor no matter how trends rise and fall.

With a softer, more wearable fabric and atypical details, the JackThreads Peacoat is an indisputable go-to. Grab yours and other modernized classics, exclusively from JackThreads.

With 3 Coats In 1, The JackThreads Field Jacket Offers Infinite Layering Possibilities

We’ve long been told that we need different jackets for different weather conditions — a down parka for below-freezing days, a wool peacoat for that chill between seasons, a raincoat for, uh, rain, a lightweight layer for breezy spring and summer nights, and a few others just in case.

Now, forget what you’ve been told. With functionality so multiple it’s almost hard to wrap your head around, the JackThreads 3-in-1 Field Jacket is the magic bullet of outerwear, an impressive feat of clothing design, and the physical embodiment of the phrase "bang for your buck".

With a water-resistant nylon outer shell, removable cotton-poly liner, plus a removable nylon hood, the 3-in-1 Field Parka can be worn five different ways, making it a panacea for all weather conditions and style moods.

But designing it was no easy feat. Creating a jacket whose individual pieces fit correctly on their own and together proved challenging.

"JackThreads has tech company roots, so we try to make everything user-friendly. We thought a lot about how a guy can get the most out of a jacket. The hardest part was making the lining — it has to fit smaller than the outer layer in order to fit inside of it, but it can’t be so small that it can’t be worn on its own."

Kat Stupp, JackThreads Design Director
JackThreads

"Our first draft and where we landed were two completely different things. When we started sampling the liner, it wasn’t coming in right. We had to rethink that the liner was going to be, how you could wear it, how it would fit inside the shell, how pockets would figure into it. It was a big win when we finally saw a sample that came in just right — for fit, for design, for everything."

Michael Diviney, JackThreads Associate Merchant

The outer shell of the jacket has traditional field jacket pockets on the outside, as well as an inside pocket for added storage. The inner liner buttons into the outer shell and features interior pockets so you can keep your cards close to your chest (literally). To wear the inner jacket on its own, simply unbutton it from the outer shell, flip it inside out, and slip it on. The pockets will be on the outside of the jacket.
JackThreads

The hood on the outer shell attaches by way of a zipper on the jacket's collar and can be removed by unzipping it, or by stowing it in a zipper compartment on the collar of the jacket (ideal for fickle spring rains).

"The timing of its release couldn’t be better. You can wear the jacket right now with the liner and it serves as a good winter jacket, and as it transitions to spring, you can wear just the shell in the rain, or just the liner if it's warmer."

Michael Diviney

And while it’s billed as a 3-in-1 jacket (and can be worn five ways if you factor in the hood), the layering possibilities are virtually endless. Try pairing the shell over a down vest, the inner liner under a denim jacket, or a down vest over the inner liner. Stay warm, stay dry, and get creative.
